Norm Devonshire

Norm Devonshire got into carving when he bought a muzzle loading rifle kit in 1976. Everything had to be finish carved. After that he started carving Father Christmas’s and hound dogs. He uses hand tools only. No power. His carving style is mostly folk art but he also does sculptures. Norm carves a large variety of subjects. He is mostly self taught, but has taken classes from Pete LeClaire and some of his peers. Norm has taught many classes and teaches soap carving to 3rd and 4th graders at the local school and has been a merit badge counselor. He has won many ribbons in competitions. He has judged at the New England Woodcarvers Spirit of Wood Show and the Maine Woodcarvers Association annual Downeast Show where he has also been head judge. He sells some of his carvings and does commissions. His carvings can be seen at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village store.
